Why Designers Love Clear Acrylic Hardware for Drapery Projects

Drapery hardware is an important design element in both the functionality and appearance of a room, and it doesn’t always need to be the visual focus. Sometimes it works best by sitting in the background and letting other design choices take center stage.

Clear acrylic hardware helps designers accomplish that balance. It provides structure and support while maintaining a visually light presence. That makes it a natural choice when the hardware should feel like part of the room rather than compete with everything else in it.

Why Designers Love Clear Acrylic Hardware for Drapery Projects.

It Lets the Rest of the Room Take the Lead

Visual restraint is one of the most appealing parts of acrylic drapery hardware. Because it can create a weightless or almost floating effect, it works especially well when a more substantial rod would interrupt the visual flow. Consider a room that looks out to a stunning mountain view or a striking city skyline. Or consider a space with strong interior elements, like highly patterned drapery or bold wallcovering. Rather than competing with those details or views, translucent rods recede into the background.

As a designer who uses Brimar’s acrylic rods, Bobbi Jo at Domain Interiors said, “We love all things acrylic. It is visually lightweight and does not overwhelm a wall of windows with heavy rods.” Another designer, Cindy McCord of Cindy McCord Design, stressed how clear hardware lets their fabric choices shine. “The lucite material mixed with the rich metal finish enhances all of the fabrics I chose for any given space,” she said.

It Adds a Modern Detail Without Taking Over the Design

While acrylic drapery hardware is minimal and neutral, it’s anything but plain. Its features let designers play with different looks in the room. A square acrylic rod can bring a more contemporary feel, while a round profile offers a softer, more traditional look.

Brimar’s acrylic hardware is one example of how those details can work together. Its clear rods can be paired with metal accents, giving designers ways to coordinate the hardware with other finishes in the room.

The picture above shows how this hardware can add a modern detail without competing with the room’s palette or soft furnishings. “This dining room’s vibrant blend of elegance and energy creates a cheerful, welcoming atmosphere,” said designer Jean Herron of Jean Herron Design. “I have always loved the modern aesthetic that the Brimar acrylic range brings to an interior.”

Choose Acrylic Based on How the Drapery Will Work

The right style and thickness of an acrylic rod will depend on your project. Consider the window span you’re working with and how the drapery will function. Will the rod cover a relatively short distance, or will it need to span a wider window? And how often will the curtains be opened and closed?

For shorter window spans that won’t be traversed daily, consider a slimmer acrylic rod, like Brimar’s Ice or Nolita collection. For wider windows and heavier fabrics, a more substantial acrylic rod like Brimar’s Cube or Stone Gate collection may be a better fit, particularly when the drapery will be drawn frequently.

There are also limits to the material you should consider. Acrylic isn’t the best choice for extremely long spans, where the weight and length of the rod can cause it to bow over time, unless sufficiently bracketed.

A Lighter Touch for Beautifully Designed Spaces

Clear acrylic hardware gives designers another way to think about the relationship between drapery hardware and the rest of a room. It can recede when something else in the design deserves more attention, and its clean finish still adds a modern detail to the room. With different rod sizes and customization options to choose from at Brimar, designers can make it fit exactly to the needs of their project.
